Rainbow Trout is an excellent species of fish
to pursue. They exist in all sorts of lakes and man-made reservoirs.
Rainbow trout will bite more on fresh bait then old stagnant bait.
There are many different types of bait used to catch trout, however
the best I have used is definitely Berkely Power Bait and fresh
nightcrawlers.
My favorite power bait color is rainbow and green. Also, if you
have the money, buy Power Bait Select because it contains sparkles
which further attract the fish. To rig Power Bait use no more than
six pound test. follow these instructions:
Rainbow trout instructions:
1. slip on a sliding sinker onto the line ( 1/4 oz- 1/2 oz)
2. slip on a red bead
3. tie on a very small swivel and securely tie it onto the end of
the line.
4. tie on a piece of line to the swivel ( the length of line will
determine how high off of the floor the bait will rise I like anywhere
from half a foot to three feet.
5. Next tie on a good treble hook use anywhere from size 18 to 14.
6. Now grab just enough Power Bait to cover the hook but that will
still float in the water. you can mold the bait to different shapes!
7. Now rub a small amount of scent on the bait and carefully cast
your bait to a good spot.
The rainbow trout
Over the years I have fished I know a couple of secrets that I am
willing to share.
Rainbow trout secrets:
1. scent is Necessary unless you are using live bait. I like using
smelly jelly in night crawler formula. Many people have reported
success using kick-n-trout, however i have not had a chance to get
my hands on some.
2. When using nightcrawlers make sure to use a worm blower or a
syringe to inflate the worm and allow it to float in the water.
Also, use a small single size 10 hook for night crawlers and cut
night crawlers in half.
3. Experiment!! When the fishing is slow try using different techniques,
one of my favorites is to sloooowleey reel in the power bait and
stop. Retrieve no more than one handle turn per five seconds, then
stop reeling to allow the bait to float above the floor. This allows
the bait to cover more area and the moving bait attracts the trout
around the area.
Have fun and take no more then you'll eat.
